Day 2: The Virungas - Visit Uganda / Tour
The Mgahinga conservation area of / Virunga ranges comprises the Mount Sabyinyo (3669m), Gahinga (3474m), and the highest, Muhavura (4127m). The Park activities are arranged from the visitor centre at Ntebeko where the briefing is done. The three volcanic peaks can be climbed and no specialist equipment is required except that a reasonable degree of fitness is necessary if one intends to enjoy the experience. The names of the three peaks come to life in translation. Muhabura means "the guide" and its towering cone is a prominent land mark. The rim of the older Sabyinyo has weathered into a ring of stubby peaks, earning it the old title "Old Man’s Teeth".
These imposing cones overshadow the stumpy Mt. Mgahinga named after the volcanic rocks "small piles of stones” or gahingas. A one day (8 hours) return trip is made to the summit of Mt. Muhabura, to the gentle strolls across the lower slopes beneath the magnificent three peak back drop. This climb allows us experience the classic Muhavura volcanic cone capped by a small but pretty crater lake. The real incentives of the day's climb are the mountain's marvelous alpine vegetation and superb panoramas. Other views include the five other Virunga volcanoes, the rift valley, Lake Edward and (in clear weather) the Rwenzori mountains. However other days of climbs can be requested that can lead us to a simultaneous convergence Rwanda, Uganda and Congo DRC at Mount Sabyinyo. Dinner and overnight at Kisoro Travelers Rest Hotel (Medium option), Kisoro Tourist Hotel or Heritage Guest House (Budget Option).
